Description
The Carvalho takes a penny loafer and puts it on a 6cm lug platform. Warm caramel leather, a rounded apron toe with the seam stitched by hand around it, and the classic wide strap across the instep with its keyhole cut and a three stitch bar at each end. Underneath, a thick treaded sole in a deeper caramel, with a smooth band above the teeth.
The upper is genuine leather from a Leather Working Group certified tannery, matte rather than glossy. The platform does two things: it adds height without a heel, and it puts a solid grip between you and a wet pavement. This is the shoe for the months when you want to be dressed but still walk everywhere.
How to wear it
- With a ribbed knit dress ending mid calf, belted at the waist, ankle bare.
- With cropped wool trousers that stop above the ankle, so the whole platform shows.
- With straight jeans turned up twice, the chunky sole is the point.
Size & fit — please read before ordering
This style has a narrow cut, made for slim feet. If your feet are wider, we recommend choosing another style from the collection rather than sizing up.
The rounded toe gives real room across the front, which is what makes this easier to fit than a pointed shoe. The instep strap has no adjustment, so a high instep is where a narrow foot will feel the most secure fit. If you plan to wear thick socks through winter, take the larger of two sizes rather than the smaller. Not sure which size to take? Wipe the leather with a barely damp cloth and let it dry naturally, away from any heat source. Use a neutral conditioner now and then to keep it supple. Brush the lug sole out after wet days so grit does not sit in the teeth.

How our shoes run: the French last
Our shoes are shaped on a French last, which gives an elegant, slightly slim fit through the foot. If your feet are narrow to average, take your usual EU size. If your feet are on the wider side, read the wide-feet notes below before choosing.
Find your size (EU size chart)
The most reliable way to size is by foot length, not by the size you usually buy — brands vary.
How to measure:
- Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall (measure at the end of the day, when feet are slightly larger).
- Mark the tip of your longest toe.
- Measure heel-to-toe in centimetres. Measure both feet and use the larger.
- Match your longest measurement to the chart below.

Wide feet? Narrow feet? Here's what to choose
- Wider feet: because of the slim French last, consider sizing up by half a size, and favour adjustable styles — ankle straps, buckles and toe-ring slides give the most room. Open styles (slides, mules, strappy sandals) suit wider feet better than closed courts.
- Narrow feet: take your true size; adjustable straps let you tighten for a secure fit.
- In-between: size up to the nearest half size — leather gives a little as it softens, but never shrinks.
Leather that moulds to you
Our calf leather is supple from the first wear and continues to soften, gently shaping to your foot over the first few outings. A snug (never tight) fit at the start is normal — it's the leather getting to know you.

Are these shoes good for wide feet?
Yes, with the right choice. Pick adjustable, open styles (ankle straps, buckles, slides, toe-ring sandals) and consider a half size up. Closed courts are the slimmest fit.
Should I size up or down?
When in doubt, size up to the nearest half size. Leather softens and gives slightly with wear; it won't shrink to fit.
Are the heels comfortable to walk in?
Most of our heels are stable block heels (roughly 4–9 cm) designed for real, all-day wear rather than standing still.
